NPC through the Buhi Barit Watershed Area team (BBWAT) recently gave a training program on coco coir handicrafts processing to some 50 members of the indigenous people’s communities in Buhi, Camarines Sur.

The trainer from Suki Trading started the program with a brief orientation, then showed the step-by-step preparation for producing coco coir. The participants were trained to properly extract the fiber from the coconut husk through the decorticating machine. Once extracted, the fibers were then made into rope using the twinning machine. The ropes can now be made into various handicraft products like floor mats, coco pots, and coco poles.

As part of BBWAT and Suki Trading’s ongoing efforts to ensure the program's sustainability, they will monitor the group, help them develop a marketing strategy for a possible income stream and recommend it for financing and sponsorship to the local government of Buhi and other government organizations.

NPC manages the Buhi Barit Watershed that supports geothermal power plants in Albay region. It is one of the 11 watershed reservations being managed by the corporation through watershed rehabilitation and protection activities.
