NPC President and CEO Fernando Martin Roxas early this week led the switch-on ceremony of the 1.2 MW generating sets for Simunul in Tawi-Tawi. He was joined by SPUG Vice President Larry I. Sabellina, Simunul Mayor Wasilah T. Abdurahman, SPUG Mindanao Dept Manager Yahcob Darayan, and Brigadier General Romeo T. Racadio of the Philippine Marines.
The additional gensets were inaugurated to cater to the growing electricity needs and population in the area. NPC first brought electricity to the island in 2000 with an initial peak load of 105 kW, service hours of six (6) hours, and coverage of two (2) barangays. Today, with a population of around 34,000, NPC gives 24/7 electricity to the municipality and covers all 15 barangays with its West Simunul and Manuk Mangkaw Diesel Power Plants (DPP).
Simunul is home to the first and oldest mosque in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia. Sheik Makhdum in Barangay Tubig Indangan was said to be built by Arab missionaries in 1380.
In addition to attending the inauguration, President Roxas visited other power plants in Tawi-Tawi including Bongao DPP and Balimbing DPP in Panglima, Sugala. He engaged with the locals, officials of the Tawi-Tawi Electric Cooperative, Inc (TAWELCO), Kaltimex, and met Tawi-Tawi Governor Yshmael I. Sali, further strengthening the collaboration between the local government, the electricity players in the province, and NPC.
The NPC Chief also shared with them the approach that the Department of Energy (DOE) is currently undertaking for the power industry including hybrid energy utilization and the future trends in energization.
Further demonstrating NPC's commitment to providing sustainable power solutions, PCEO Roxas traveled to Zamboanga City where he visited Great Sta. Cruz DPP. While in Zamboanga City, President Roxas graced the culmination of the three-day Spare Parts Management System Program (SPMP) and Fuel Rate Improvement Program (FRIP) Roadshow and Workshop for Western Mindanao Operations Division.
The two (2) flagship programs launched by SPUG recently were participated by the Plant Heads, Engineers II, and OM Technicians from the NPC power plants/barges of ZAMBASULTA. It aims to establish policy in the planning of requirements and procurement of spare parts and to present strategies for optimum efficiency of power plants in order to attain fuel savings.
