The National Power Corporation (NPC) was created under Commonwealth Act No. 120 on November 3, 1936 as a non-stock government corporation. In 1960, NPC was converted into a stock corporation wholly owned by the government under Republic Act (RA) 2641. In 1971, its charter was revised through RA 6395.
With the passage of RA 9136, otherwise known as the “Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001,” NPC remains a government-owned-and-controlled corporation mandated to energize far-flung, off-grid areas and islands in the Philippines, thus the coined role ‘missionary electrification.’
NPC fulfills this role through its power generation facilities called Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) plants. At present, the corporation operates 272 SPUG power plants in 222 areas in 192 municipalities across 35 provinces all over the archipelago.
On top of powering the islands, NPC is also mandated to perform effective and efficient management of the government’s remaining power assets such as the 1001.10 MW Agus and Pulangi Hydroelectric Power Plants in Mindanao. The Agus Power Plant Complex consists of six (6) cascading power plants from Lake Lanao in Marawi City down to the famed Maria Cristina Falls in Iligan City while Pulangi IV Hydroelectric Power Plant is located in Maramag, Bukidnon. These facilities are the major contributors of power in the region.
Another mandate of the corporation is the management of 11 watershed areas and 22 dams in the country that support power generation. It performs watershed rehabilitation and protection programs for the watershed reservations which have a total area of 485, 199 hectares. It likewise oversees the operations of the dams that support power facilities to ensure their integrity.
With 87 years of public service through provision of electricity from the main grid and now to the off-grid islands, NPC continues to bring its expertise and share its experience to the fore. NPC shall brave every hurdle to reach its vision of powering all missionary areas by 2028 and in pursuing its duties for the Filipino people.
