NPC Buhi-Barit Watershed Area team (BBWAT) on February 2 took part in a clean-up drive in Lake Buhi in celebration of World Wetlands Day.

Organized by the DENR-City Environment and Natural Resources, the activity aims to raise national awareness of the vital role of wetlands for the people and the planet as they contribute to biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, freshwater availability, world economies, and more. Mayor Rey P. Lacoste gave a short address highlighting the importance of the activity and of preserving the cleanliness of the lake.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests. This commemoration is celebrated annually to promote conservation and restoration efforts to help slow down their rapid deconstruction.

After the clean-up drive, a brief program was held at the Buhi Millenium Center with all the participating agencies gathered including NPCโ€™s BBWAT, Protected Area Management Board (PAMB), Peopleโ€™s Energy Services Inc., Department of Agriculture, Provincial Government of Camarines Sur, PENRO, Buhi Municipal Police Station, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Navy Reservist, Department of Education, CSPC Buhi Campus, Child Development Workers, and other volunteer groups.

Buhi Barit Watershed is under NPCโ€™s stewardship along with 10 other watersheds in the country that support power generation.
