NPC’s Bicol Operations initiates improving power supply of Burias Island village
NPC’s Bicol Operations Division (BOD) has recently facilitated the transfer of a generating set and its associated accessories from its Batan Diesel Power Plant in Albay to Burias Island in Masbate to pave the way for an increased electricity supply in Barangay Osmenia, Claveria.
The five-metric ton genset and accessories made a two-hour boat

ride from Batan to Legaspi Port, another 3 hours of land travel from Legaspi to Balatan Port in Camarines Sur and finally a one and a half-hour of boat ride from Balatan to San Pascual Port in Masbate. The BOD personnel themselves dismantled, hauled, transported, reassembled, and installed the said unit to its new location.
With the additional genset, Osmenia Diesel Power Plant in Burias Island can increase its dependable capacity from 170kW to 270kW. This will consequently allow an increase of service hours for the village’s 201 connected households to 16 hours.
The said genset is an excess unit from Batan DPP after it secured more than enough power reserve or spare power supply.
NPC as mandated by the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 or Republic Act 9136 is tasked to bring light to far-flung islands and communities in the country. Currently, it operates 276 Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) power plants in almost 200 municipalities.
