The National Power Corporation kicks off its dam safety campaign in communities of Angat, Ambuklao, Binga, San Roque, and Caliraya dams.
Held via video conferencing platform Zoom, the first six sessions were devoted
to the municipalities of Bulacan and Laguna which are the host communities of Angat and Caliraya dams.
NPCโs department head for dams management Jong Sison said that apart from their in-house professionals, they have invited speakers from the PAGASA Weather and Flood Forecasting Center, Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, National Irrigation Administration-Region 3, CBK Power Company, and the provincesโ respective Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Councils.
โTogether with these agencies, we guided our participants from the academe, local government units, and local agencies through NPCโs established dam safety program and flood forecasting and warning operations during the rainy season. This will strengthen their capacity, especially of the LGUs to deal with flood-related hazards,โ Sison said.
The sessions also demonstrated how the different agencies involved in the dam operation work together and practice prudence in releasing water from the dams and in mitigating its effects.
NPC shall hold similar educational campaigns in Benguet and Pangasinan where the other three large dams are located.
All five dams support power generation, while Angat and San Roque dams also provide water for irrigation requirements and domestic use.
On top of its annual dam safety campaigns, NPC also conducts mandatory safety inspections and assessments of the dams under its stewardship to ensure their integrity and safety.
