NPC Powers Tapiantana Island in Basilan

The National Power Corporation on Monday, October 17 launched and opened its new power facility on Tapiantana Island, Tabuan Lasa in Basilan, giving 8 hours of electricity to the initial 100 household connections on the island. NPC shall also serve as the area’s distribution utility after Basilan Electric Cooperative waived its franchise to operate on the island.

The ceremonial switch-on was led by Governor Jim Hataman, Mayor Moner Manisan of Tabuan Lasa, Brigade Com. General Domingo Gogway of the Philippine Army and Atty. Rogel Teves, NPC’s Vice President for Power Engineering Service.

Mayor Moner was optimistic that with the presence of NPC on the island, the local economy will be improved especially its agriculture sector.

NPC, as mandated by the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 or Republic Act 9136, is tasked to perform missionary electrification in the farthest communities and islands not connected to the main grid.
