The National Power Corporation on Monday held a simple celebration to commemorate its 87th founding anniversary with the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Amenah F. Pangandaman and Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Raphael M. Lotilla at the NPC Platinum Hall in Diliman, Quezon City.

The celebration carries the theme, Transcending at 87: Service Beyond Adversity which reflects NPC’s determination to brave the present challenges and demands in the industry.

Secretary Pangandaman affirmed NPC’s role in ensuring the continuous development of the country through missionary electrification, calling the corporation a beacon of enduring commitment to serve and provide a better life for Filipinos.

The Budget Secretary also ensured her and the DBM’s continued support to NPC as it fulfills its mandates. “Makakaasa po kayo na katulad ng aming palaging pagsuporta sa inyo, nasa likod po ng NPC ang Department of Budget and Management (DBM). In any way na makatutulong po tayo na mapabuti ang buhay ng ating mga minamahal na kababayan, palagi pong nandoon ang DBM,” Secretary Pangandaman said.

Secretary Pangandaman encouraged the NPC employees present at the hall and those tuned in online to embody the anniversary theme by enduring instruments of unity and preserving the legacy and service beyond borders for generations to come. “Buo ang aming suporta at tiwala sa NPC as they fulfill [President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr’s] vision of total electrification by 2028. Isa ang NPC sa maghahatid sa Bagong Pilipinas na ating minimithi,’ said the Budget Secretary.

He likewise rallied them to work together to ensure that electricity remains accessible and affordable for the areas that NPC serves.

Looking at NPC’s former presidents present during the event, Secretary Lotilla said that he couldn’t help but also see the collective struggles that NPC had for decades which behooved it to adapt and evolve.

“This is one that we together in NPC must [continue] to bear in mind and work hard for. With this, I am excited to see NPC’s future of transcendence and hope, may you rise above the challenges bringing the country to progress through electrification,” Secretary Lotilla said.

The past presidents who went to celebrate with NPC were Ms. Ma. Gladys Cruz-Sta. Rita (April 2013-March 2017), Mr. Froilan A. Tampinco (October 2008-July 2013), Mr. Guido Alfredo A. Delgado (February 1994-June 1998), and Dr. Francisco L. Viray (May 1993-January 1994).

The National Power Corporation energized and inaugurated two (2) new off-grid areas in Taytay and Culion in Palawan as part of its commitment to providing reliable electricity in remote communities.

On August 25, 2023, the 30 kW generating unit in Galoc Island, a barangay under the Municipality of Culion, was tested and commissioned by NPC-Palawan Operations Division’s technical personnel. The official inauguration of the power plant took place on August 27, 2023, and was graced by the presence of key individuals including Mayor Ma. Virginia N. De Vera of Culion, Barangay Captain Mark Anthony Abrera, Mrs. Ruth Fortes of Busuanga Island Electric Cooperative, Engr. Ricardo Rodriguez from the Provincial Government of Palawan, and NPC-POD’s Engr. Frederick B. Barrios.

Galoc DPP now serves 90 households and is accessible by boat from Concepcion, Busuanga, or Coron Town.

Meanwhile in Taytay, Palawan, Bgy. Batas has been energized with two (2) 50 kW genset units giving electricity to 53 households on September 26, 2023. Batas DPP can be reached by a 3 to 4-hour pump boat ride from Taytay Poblacion. Electricity is seen to greatly assist in boosting the local livelihood which is seaweed farming.
