The Tiwi Geothermal Reservation is one of seven reserved areas that the National Power Corporation exercises complete jurisdiction and control. It is one of the major power sources in the Bicol Region, providing 330 MW (maximum capacity) of power. Maintaining its productive capacity in terms of continuous ample supply of steam is the ultimate concern of its management. Geothermal operations consume large amount of water. The impact of the water use will depend upon the amount of recharge and storage in the area. In general, water is used for drilling operations. For a geothermal reservoir to have appreciable potential for exploitation, it must meet among other requirements a sufficient water recharge to maintain production over many years. However, these are by no means mutually exclusive but inherently interrelated such that a holistic ecosystem approach is necessary to address them. Creeping commercial and industrial developments are starting to occur or conceived not only in the proposed Special Zone of Geothermal Development but also within the entire reservation. Given such predicament, NPC has to live up to its mandate of managing, protecting, developing and rehabilitating the reservation the best way possible.
