Lake Lanao transcends practically all
developmental activities in the whole island of Mindanao. Agus River, the only outlet of the lake extends over the stretch of 36
km. from the mouth of Agus River in Marawi City to Iligan Bay is the site
of the existing six (6) hydroelectric power plants in cascade
configuration and presently being operated by Mindanao Generation,
National power Corporation with an aggregate installed capacity of 719MW.
Lake Lanao-Agus River watershed is
considered as critical because it serves as a source of water for
hydropower and irrigation. On February 26, 1992,
Proclamation No. 871 was issued declaring the lake as
protected area. Subsequently, the Lake Lanao Watershed Protection And
Development Council (LLWPDC) was created under
Memorandum Order No. 421 on August 14,
1972 with membership of different Government Agencies such as National
Power Corporation, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine Chamber of
Commerce and Industries, Mindanao State University, Association of
Mindanao Rural Electric Cooperative, Save Lake Lanao Movement and the
Department of Environmental and Natural Resources. The Council serves as
the policy governing body in all development projects in the watershed
area.
